One of the rifles I have wanted for many years is a bolt action in either 35 Whelen or 338/06. I have would like to hunt Moose or Elk and although one of my 30/06's would be fine having a little more punch is appealing. Won't happen this year but we'll see what the future holds.

I am not in the Weatherby class so will look to rebarrel my M700 Remington in 30/06 probably to 338-06. The Whelen is a great caliber but I think the 338-06 will give a little more range. The only thing holding me back is the 700 is a shooter particularily with 150 gr bullets so don't want to screw up a good old rifle. It was the first center fire rifle I ever bought so I may look to buy a beater and have it rebarreled although when I'm done that I may have paid for the Weatherby. Will check it out and who knows I may just buy a used 300 win mag and call it good although rebarreling and existing rifle to another 06 platform can't hurt too bad.

If memory serves me right the Savage 340 was a bolt in 30/30. I've got a 340 in 222 Remington and it's nothing special probably because I haven't worked up a load I'm happy with it yet and the scope mount on them are the dumbest damn mounts I have ever seen.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.35_Whelen

Info on it Towsend Whelen wildcatted it in 1922.

Deputy:

I haven't looked at the new Federal round as I have two 30/06's and thought the Bolt would be the one to convert. I won't sell or trade either one as the other is a Browning BAR that was my dads favorite rifle and that will get passed on by me some day. That Mdl 700 classic is a swett looking rifle. Thanks for the link.
