Went back up to my uncles and with (5) 5 gallon jugs of water with plywood between #1 and #2 - Jugs #2 - #4 just water, then between #4 and #5 another sheet of plywood.

Test Load: 290-gr SWC Keith Style, 16.5 gr of 2400, Fed 155 LMPP

Test Distance To Target: 20 feet

I was not totally happy with the test, but I only had 1 shot on this..... more testing will be required

The outcome was that I had penetration up to the 2nd sheet of plywood, as the bullet struck the wood sideways, and bounced which I recovered. The over all shape of the bullet was un-deformed other than rifling marks from the barrel.

I will be conducting further test on this.

I like shooting stuff. :)

Were you looking for better penetration?

Yes I was, but shooting thru CBM plywood is harder than regular plywood. I had hoped for a complete pass thru of the 2nd sheet of CBM.

I may have to increase my powder charge again..... :D
What is the max load for Ruger? You also may have better luck with different bullets. Try the XTPs. I bet you'd get some penetration then!
What a wallop, though...betcha it'd make him lose his place!!!

With hard cast bullets you get more penetration than with XTP bullets, as they are designed for something much differant that penetration.... XTP's are designed for expansion.

The max powder wt that I can go would be 20.4 gr of 2400 and as you can see with Win 296 it's even hotter yet.

290-gr SWC GC .430 dia Alliant 2400 20.4 grains WLP @ 1375 fps

290-gr SWC GC .430 dia Winchester 296 24 grains WLP @ 1490 fps

I'm going to be working up on my reloading to 17.5 gr of 2400 next.

I could switch bullet design and wt, but then I would be switching powders to and that is not what I really want to do right now.

So, it sure will be fun shooting thru some more 5 gal jugs though

Love those short-barrelled SAs.....
Well keep us informed. If I can't shoot things, I'll take videos of other people shooting things.

Now Bountyhunter, I think you ought to load up some 300-gr JSP's with 22.0 gr of H110 and get ready to rock and roll..... That load is one of my old loads that will get your attention in a 5.5" Ruger BV.
I like the sissy loads.
Bigger....slower.....yeah.....but we ain't got no baaaaaaaaaaaaaad bears down here...
