Seattle cop held in South Dakota shooting

(Published August 10, 2008)

STURGIS, S.D. — An off-duty Seattle police officer has been detained after a member of the Hells Angels motorcycle gang was shot and wounded during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota.

It happened about 1 a.m. Saturday in the Loud American Roadhouse - a bar along Sturgis' main street. Police say there was a confrontation between members of the Hells Angels and the Iron Pigs, a motorcycle group made up of law-enforcement officers.

Sturgis police say two gunshots were fired. The Seattle officer was not identified.

Seattle police say they were notified of the incident, and that four other Seattle officers were apparently also present during the shooting.

All five officers were relieved of duty pending an investigation by South Dakota authorities, Seattle police spokesman Sean Whitcomb said.

Whitcomb says Seattle Police Chief Gil Kerlikowske sent a team of investigators to Sturgis to gather information.

The Sturgis rally officially ends Sunday.

People forget that cops are people too...get mad...drink too much....screw up....big oops....sometimes, it's better to leave the gun home.....gunpowder and alcohol are a ruinous mixture....shame that a good time turned bad....kinda like pizza...you order it up, you gotta pay for it.......

When we rode, I always made a point of us be loners....no colors on the back...rode a Kawasaki....no chance of mistaking me for a "club" member.....we've had them all down here for bike week....don't want any trouble.....

Just because they are cops doesn't mean they don't like riding and being someplace like Sturgis. They have a right to be there too. I just hold the LEOs to a higher standard and hope they have a good head on their shoulders. These guys may have been out looking for trouble - else they could have walked before it came to a fight.
And there again - we may not know the real story if we are only hearing it from the newspapers.

You would think cops would spend their vacation at someplace other than a motorcycle gang convention.
Sturgus is not a biker gang convention by any means. There are the hard element that attend, and they know how many LEO's also attend from various agencies around the country to keep the gangs in line. But Strugus is a bikers rally, no matter what kind of bike in the sense of motor bikes you ride. From choppers to electric glides fully dressed out with many people from all differant life styles.

Would it be a place I would take my wife to... hell no! As the Outlaw Club type women don't know how to keep things covered while in public. I for one would not want to expose my wife to this type of activity.

But I just wanted to clear it up that Sturgus is not just for "Outlaw Biker Gangs"

I'm well aware of all that. Dad and I used to ride. But we had the smarts to stay away from places where there could be trouble all the same. And being at Sturgis or Bike Week and hanging out in rowdy bars are two different things. Their cop/spidey-sense did not alert them?
