MIDPINES, CALIF. (AP) -- A fast-spreading fire near an entrance to Yosemite National Park forced residents to evacuate 170 homes and caused officials to cut power to the park.

The fire grew from about 1 1/2 square miles to 25 square miles on Saturday, and was threatening about 2,000 homes, said Daniel Berlant, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

About 900 firefighters battled the blaze on both sides of a steep, rugged canyon along the Merced River.

Most of the evacuated homes were in the town of Midpines, located along Highway 140, the thoroughfare that leads to the park's west entrance.

State fire spokeswoman Karen Guillemin said the cause of the fire "is definitely target shooting," but he would not elaborate.

The National Weather Service forecast sunny weather Sunday with temperatures in the high 90s.

On Saturday, firefighting efforts were hampered by temperatures over 100 degrees and low humidity. The weather, coupled with a dry wilderness area, has made fighting the blaze very hazardous.

"Dozers are trying to push dirt as fast as they can to get safety zones for our firefighters that are out there," Guillemin said. "Crews are cutting brush as fast as they can but it's an extremely dangerous situation at this point."

The California National Guard planned to send two Blackhawk helicopters, Capt. Al Bosco said.

Tracers???
They could have been using mil surp ammo, like Norinco, Russian etc where those countries put more steel in their copper which can cause sparks when hitting rocks etc. This also maybe a ploy of the media to feed the anti gunners for limiting targets shooting etc simply...... Where is the proof that target shooting was the cause, unless the shooters came forward and admitted to it.
I'd want to see some proof. It's possible, but highly unlikely.
Or, they could be just lying.....I wouldn't put it past someone with an anti-gun agenda.....
No no no - you guys are all wrong. Here's what happened -- There were a couple of ******** sitting in their old plastic lawn chairs, target shooting at some empty cans. They were sitting there minding their own business while drinking beer, smoking cigarettes and plinking with their 22's. After a couple twelve packs or three, one got a bright idea and got a jug out of the back of the pick-up (with dixie flags on the back windows and nakkid lady mudflaps), set it out for a target and they commenced to shooting at it. Well, they had the jug an a little hill slightly higher than they were and were missing it. Then one of the boys gets a little closer and finally puts a couple holes in it. This yellowish liquid starts seeping down the hill towards them and they all get up to start moving their gear when #1 bozo flips his cig into the brush, where the yellow liquid has now seeped, and a sudden whoosh ocurrs as the yellow liquid, which was gasoline, errupts into a fireball, and sets the whole countryside on fire, hence the reason target shooting was the cause. Just my take on the whole thing, of course.

impossible, us ******** no that gas is gold.
I just watched some night shooting my LEO's at a shooting range, and the bullets were sparking off of the metal popper targets. Just don't know if it is enough to spark a blaze though.
I is interesting that it was a state fire official (who is likely to be very liberal) as a opposed to one from that county. The counties surrounding Yosemite are very very conservative, and very very pro-gun.
:? Howbout them little esplodin targets I use from time ta time ??
