Was out looking for some supplies this weekend and glanced in the shotgun case. I really hadn't noticed before but Mossberg has a nice low end shotgun called the mdl 88 Maverick. I remember a company that produced them several years back and wonder if Mossberg bought them out. What also caught my eye was the sticker on the polymer black stock that proclaimed "Made in the U.S.A.". Price very reasonable at $187 +tax. For a new one. Had dual slide rails and dual extractors, nice fit and finish. It comes with only one modified choke tube but any Mossberg Accu-Chokes fit. Also extra bbls from the 500 models will fit if I want to get a slug barrel. I think this might be a pretty good field and truck gun. My only complaint is the thick recoil pad catches on my shirt when mounting, so I might want to change that out if it is a bother. Haven't bought it yet, still looking and researching. I sure do like that Mossberg Silver Reserve. I can get one of those for $376---- Now that is a nice stack barrel shotgun. Beautiful wood and nice finish. Almost too nice to get dirty out hunting. Made in Turkey if I remember right.
Anybody have any experience with the Maverick?

Handled quite a few through the years...I wouldn't have one...too many good used pumps around...they are low end and rougher...I've bought a used Mossberg 500C Youth Model 20 ga., a Winchester 120 20 ga., and a Revelation(Mossberg 500) 20. ga..for 150, 150, and 99.00 respectively....just bought a Winch 1300 Defender 12 ga. 8-shot black/black for $225 out the door...I'd hunt a good used one for the same money...should be able to get an 870, a 500, or a 1300 for that money...and have a lot better gun....

a bit mis-leadin'............the stock is made in America but i believe that the barrel, and many of the receivers/parts are made in old mexico and then shipped into Eagle Pass, TX and the gun is assembled there.................

http://www.swtexaslive.com/november2006/guns here they go into some detail about the made in mexico aspect

the maverick line is owned by mossberg and was mossberg's answer to the remington express to get a low-end gun on the market.......and for anyone on a tight budget it will get the job done. While similar to the mossberg 500, i prefer the 500 for its 10 year warranty over the maverick's one year warranty and i think just a bit more care goes into the fitting and assembly of the 500's over the maverick.

i still prefer an 870 or ithaca 37.

That link is misleading...if you read it literally, you might think that the Maverick is used by the military...not so accordingt to this one, which says only Mossberg passed the tests... http://www.mossberg-shotguns.com/ I think the sticker and the website are trying to make a silk purse from a sow's ear...though it may be a good sow's ear....I'll pay the small difference and get proven quality....which, in my opinion is Ithica, Remington, Winchester, and Mossberg, when it comes to pumps...and in that order....best pump I ever had was a satin nickel Ithica 8-shot.....

One other thought.....I've been looking at a lot of aftermarket stuff for my 500C 20ga, and a lot of the products have a discaimer that it will not fit the Maverick.....btw: I did put a side saddle on my 500C last week..... :D

Well, I guess I'll keep looking. Don't really need a shotgun right now but the question needed to be answered - and it was. Thanks for the links and info. I hadn't got that far, and the Mossberg site made it sound like a good deal.
The one I handled was nice looking and tight. I know some people had problems with them 3 - 4 years ago when it was still a single slide rail gun.
And I read the news clipping as some of the parts are made in Mexico and the receiver, barrel, stock are made in the USA. I guess putting all the parts together in the USA lets them put that sticker on the stock.

I had a 12 gauge Maverick pump about 12 years ago. Wal-Mart used to carry them for about $150. I took it home and cut the barrel to 18.5" and never fired it in the 2 years I had it. It seemed ok for the money. I'd buy another.
