I was just wonderin' what other people would think the ultimate survival gun is. It can any make or model with any accessories that you believe it should have. Let the debate begin.

I think a good case can be made for an accurate .22 rimfire rifle backed up by a centerfire handgun for defense.

If circumstances call for a centerfire rifle than it could be backed up by an accurate .22 handgun for living off the land, as well as a light centerfire handgun for personal defense if possible and appropriate.

A .22 lets you carry a much larger supply of ammo for a given bulk and weight, will take small game with minimal meat loss, and will have a much smaller noise signature if stealth is desired.

Really, the decision would depend on the circumstances. In most cases I would feel well equipped with a good .22 rifle and a suitable medium sized ,357 Magnum revolver. a couple of hundred rounds of .22 and thirty rounds of .357 would put one in a good position. More ammo would be better and doubling that would not add much to the pack.

If I needed a centerfire I would chose my lever action .357 or my Winchester Mod 70 in .308, backed up by a light .357 like my 5" Mod 60 or 4" Mod 19 and a good .22 revolver for living off the land. The .22 would not have to be holstered if that was a problem. It could be kept in the pack, though having it handy might make a difference if you were traveling.

Not much you couldn't handle with one of those setups. You could still carry a reasonable amount of water, food and gear, and move far and fast if need be.

If I could only have one gun it would be an AR22. That way I could change uppers and have a rifle and a pistol. I'm assuming I could still do the federal paperwork in this question. I would want a 22 over a 223 because a 22 can do everything I would need to do with a gun.

By the way I have an AR22.

I figured it was fitting because of the lack of privacy in recent years if you know what I mean.

Lever action rifle in 357 / 38 and matching sidearm will handle everything in food or protection with Shot shells , 38 colt , 38 spec and 357 mags . A target 22lr pistol with a muffler will make a good gun when you don't want to be seen or hear for protection and hunting .

But you only get to keep one.

First, I'll change the picture. Second, my gun would probably be a short barrel rifle in 22 mag with a low-mid power scope or a EOTech sight. I might even go with a short double barrel shotgun in either 12 or 16 gauge with a variety of shells (buckshot and birdshot most likely)
